Listers:
I have a Pennsy S-2 turbine imported by NJI/Custom Brass in 1977-78. I am in the process of (1) Making the engine road-worthy and (2) Installing DCC. This particular model represented the first generation of Korean built brass models from the late 1970's. While these models were known for their exceptional detail, they had a few but substantial short-comings in construction and performance. The Korean builders were new at this and were definitely undergoing a learning curve.
At any rate, I have a few questions for the huddled masses:
1. Has anyone tried to DCC a Custom Brass S-2? What was your experience? Good or Bad? Did you have to work on the engine (running quality) to get it ready for DCC? If so, what did you do?
2. Alco imported its version of the S-2 in 1977. Unlike the Custom Brass version, this model was built in Japan by KMT. I ask the same questions about this version as I do in question 1.
I am writing notes as I go along on converting the S-2. In addition to the photographs that I am taking, I am preparing a short article to appear in TKM..........Yes Mr. Buchan, I am publically committing to this.....there are now witnesses!! :-)
Seriously, I think that having articles on how to repair, improve the performance of, or DCC Pennsy brass engines would be interesting articles in the TKM. Many SPF's have some Pennsy brass......and many of the early brass models do need some tinkering, tweaking, and even TLC to get them operating satisfactory. My article will focus on my experiences as I improve the running quality of the S-2 and then eventually DCC it.
Any thoughts, input or advice that you can provide me would be greatly appreciately.
Thank you!
Ted Andrews
