I saw something at Trains and Planes here in Houston TX.  They have a Lionel display layout.  The layout is behind Plexiglass.  But, there are push buttons on the side.  If you push one, a train moves, logs dump, el. al.

This way the layout is "interactive", bur is not running all the time.  Even GG-1's need a break.
