Regarding your question about adding a Belpaire section to the top of the Walthers N2s without removing any of the radial firebox, I believe that this would have to be extremely thin at the top center.  The top of the boiler and firebox should be level at this location.
 
I can recall when my father went to the shop to purchase one of the Westside N2sa models nearly thirty years ago.  He was a retired PRR engineman and could very quickly spot any problems on a model.  The first N2sa he looked at did not meet his approval, as there was a noticeable "step" at the joint between the boiler and firebox.  The firebox at the top center was 1.5mm or 2mm higher than the boiler - not much but he noticed it right away.  So he asked to see a second model and on this example the boiler and firebox lined up at the top.
