Doug & List,

I have a copy of PRR drawing No. C-433559 for "Locomotives - Turbo Generator Application and Details" dated 8/1/1945, showing the modernized front end arrangement. Included on this drawing is a table of dimensions, showing specific dimensions for all the classes covered where these varied from one class to another. The N1s and N2sa are both included in this table, along with the K4s, L1s, H9s, H10s, M1, M1a, M1b, I1s and I1sa. The table also indicates if "Details No. 4, 4A and 5" are also fitted to each class, these items being the two supports for the "chin platform" (4, 4A) and the platform itself (5). This was fitted on the modernized N2sa, but not on the N1s (like the I1s/I1sa), probably because the platforms fitted to the front air tanks were already so high that they could not be raised without fouling the smoke box door.

In addition to the photos of N2sa Nos. 8408 and 8929 with modernized fronts on the North East Rails web site, I have a photo of modernized No. 8149 from the E.L. Roberts collection. All three of these engines have Walschaerts valve gear.

For photos of N1s engines with modernized fronts, you can find photos of Nos. 7128, 7228 and 9995 on the North East Rails site.
