Fred,
As I recall, it was right around the time you suggest that open autoracks
were first used, perhaps a year or two earlier. But the automobile boxcars
had ceased to be a major hauler of the traffic at least a decade earlier.
The railroad share of finished auto traffic had declined to a single digit
percentage before the autorack was introduced.
