Rick,

Maybe for those specific assignments, but assignment markings can be found
circa WWII and earlier on many cars.  Silmilary to those in your
experience, these are often specially equipped cars for auto-parts or
appliance service but also include refridgerator cars (meat).  For those,
Jim Singer of 5th Ave Car shops has a decal sheet of assignements... I
added on to the NX reefer I wrote up for TKM ;^)
