Subject: [PRR-talk] PRR position signals in Japan

During three separate trips to Japan with extensive rail travel, I've see 3-yelloe-light position signals on a black disc that look and operate just like those on Pennsy. The black disk signal heads were about 10-12 inches smaller in diameter, but otherwise seemed identical. These were seen mostly on JR (Japan Rail) station lead tracks and on smaller private railroads. As far as I could tell, modern three-light red-yellow-green signals ruled mainline traffic as in most of the rest of the world, but it was fun to see working Pennsy-like position light signals here and there. The three primary aspects of the three lights seem to mean the same as they did on PRR. I have some photos and video of these; one changes from horizontal stop to vertical go taped from the front railfan seat on an Odakyu Railway EMU train approaching Tokyo.

I had heard sometime ago that PRR had helped rebuild Japanese railways during US post-war occupation there, which would explain the signals.

Does anyone know anything about this?
