Jerry et al,
The purpose of marker lamps was to designate the end of a train. Without a
locomotive or markers it was just a cut of cars. Normally, both markers
showed red to the rear. On some railroads yellow as shown on the side of
the rear car next to the main track when the train was in a siding and was
going to be overtaken by another train. If a locomotive was to be operated
without cars marker lamps would be on the rear end.
Classification lamps were used on the front of a locomotive only when
ordered by train order. White was shown on the front of a locomotive that
was to be used on an Extra. Three different types Extras were operated.
Those were Extra, Passenger Extra and Work Extra. Those designations were
specified in the body of the Train Order authorizing the train to be run as
an Extra. An example would be "Engine 6744 run extra Columbus to Dennison".
Green was shown when the locomotive was to be used to head a section of a
regular schedule. All sections except the last carried green. An example
would be "Engine 5404 display signals and run as 1st number 30 Columbus to
Pittsburgh".
