This is not true. There were marker lights on the pilot beams of
locomotives, while the class lights were on the boiler. The markers on
the front of the locomotive were illuminated (used) when the locomotive
was running in reverse. See early articles in TKM regarding class and
marker lamps.
After the clawfoot style class lights were done away with by the PRR
between 1925 and 1932, subsequent markers in the tombstone and later
bull's-eye styles were mounted on the boiler in the same area that the
class lights previously were. The tombstone markers were capable of
showing red or yellow. Yellow was shown to the rear under certain
conditions in MBS territory.
