[PRR-talk] PRR L1s 3635 in Passenger Service

Hello list,

I just received Arcadia's book "Railroads of Monmouth
County." In the New York and Long Branch section
(which is rather large), there is a shot on page 29 of
L1s Mikado 3635 lugging nine passenger cars at Red
Bank, NJ.

While I've seen other shots of L1s engines with steam
and signal lines for troop train service, PRR 3635 (in
the photo, anyway), only has a signal line. Most
likely this photo was taken during the warmer months
when steam heat wasn't necessary.

In the photo, the engine has the 90F75 tender, the
revised headlight and generator locations, and what
look like the bullseye marker lights.

According to the 1949-1952 MP229s, L1s 3635 was
assigned to the New York Division. By 1950 the engine
had trainphone antenna on the tender. I'm having
trouble seeing in the photo whether the tender has
trainphone antenna or the lines above the tender are
just part of the background.

The bright side of all of this research is I can
justify another L1s for my future railroad. I realize
that the L1s class didn't regularly get pressed into
commuter service, but I enjoy seeing Consolidations
and Mikes toting passenger trains now and then.

Doug
