Fred and Pat,
The eastbound Boston sleeper(s) ( depending on the year)
were carried eastbound in trains 46-186 The New Englander and The Quaker. The
Quaker being a New Haven train. Westbound is a little more difficult to
explain. In 1950 the westbound through sleeper was shown as 189-37-51 The William
Penn. The sleepers came out of Boston on New Haven train 189 the William
Penn and combined with Pennsy trains 37-51 The Iron City Express at New York,
but the through sleeper was shown on a separate schedule again as the William
Penn. One item of interest in 1950 was that 37 and 51 carried a diner from
ALTOONA to Pittsburgh.
In later years (1960) as trains were discontinued the
sleeper ran east as #24-172 The New Englander. They came west in #189 and 61
(except Saturdays and Sundays and May 30th. July 4th. and September 5th.) and
# 193 and 61 Sundays (except May 29., July 3rd., and Sept. 4; also runs May
30th., July 4th., and Sept. 5th.) The westbound sleeper did not run Saturday
in this schedule. Also eastbound you could ride coach from PGH to BOS
changing at PHL. However westbound there were no coaches NYP to PGH as the car(s)
were conveyed in #61 The Pittsburger.
I would think the article you had referenced to Pat, was
this 60's era use of The Pittsburger to convey these cars.
