1. Were all of the cars equiped with steam heating piping??

2. Why were combines sometime used as rider cars?? (Rather than coaches
or something else?)
3. Were these rider cars steam heated??

Dad was a passenger conductor between Harrisburg and Altoona. He worked a
passenger train east and a mail train west. As far as I can remember all of
the cars on the mail train had steam heat lines but not sure if they were
hooked up. What I remember of rider cars was in later years when PRR and NYC
merged and most of the mail trains went to Flexi Vans. The Flexi Van cars were
steam line equipped but when a rider coach was used it was usually placed
right behind the engines. Too young to remember combines, perhaps another
member of the list can help out.

4. Some N-5 cabooses were lettered Assigned Railway Express or something
like that. Were they steam line equiped??

My guess would be they were equipped to run at the higher speeds ( 60+) that
the mail trains operated at and were kept in that pool. Again, just an
assumption and perhaps others can help.

                           Merry Christmas

                            Bill
